This section is still a work in progress, I will update it as I work on it.Early LifeGladio's training as the Shield started at a very young age. Clarus was the one in charge of teaching him everything the Shield was meant to represent, to be, to do and to become, but the issues of the Amicitia's generational training were primarily lost on him.What Clarus considered training passed down from father to son had lost its meaning over the generations and turned into generational abuse that Gladio was the last to suffer.Though Gladio did suffer, it was always considered far more lenient than that of his alcoholic grandfather and Clarus' hand was often tempered by his mother.Gladio adored his mother and spent a great deal of time with her when she would put an end to his training for a day, often times spending his days outdoors with her in nature.The outdoors became Gladio's safe place at times when he felt he couldn't escape his father's wrath.Despite the abuse he endured under Clarus, he still loved his father and looked to him for much.Early Life - Post Mother's Death - Pre-Insomnia's FallOnce his mother died, Gladio's training no longer had the buffer she provided and he suffered a great deal more than he would have had she endured after the birth of his sister, Iris.He was pulled out of school and taught in the home, barred from going out for frivolous ventures unless it was something Clarus deemed necessary for Gladio's training and he was generally isolated from the rest of the world, forbade from having anything that Clarus thought would simply be a distraction from his duties as Shield.Gladio had a basic phone and laptop that were strictly for school and work purposes and the only reason he was allowed to have books was because Clarus saw benefit to his want to read.Many of his scars are a result of Clarus' training after the death of Gladio's mother.Having grown up the way he did, Gladio began to believe that the abuse he endured under the guise of misguided training was simply a normal way of living.Upon meeting Noctis, Gladio found himself jealous of the relationship the prince had with his father, King Regis, having seen how gentle Regis was when handling his son and starting to wonder if anyone else actually knew what it was like to be hit by their father.He began to resent his position as Shield, becoming angry at the way Noctis would respond to Regis when he himself had never known what it was like to feel a gentle hand from his own father.After Noctis brought Iris back to the Citadel safely, Gladio set his anger aside and took Regis' scolding as some manner of proof that Regis just wasn't openly displaying whatever heavy handedness might be going on with Noctis, much like his own father was careful never to strike him in public.He continued to believe that it was normal until he was later introduced to Ignis and Prompto and found they too hadn't quite experienced the same things he did, only then starting to suspect that perhaps his upbringing wasn't as normal as he'd thought.PresentWIPAdditional Post FFXV InfoHe does not speak of his upbringing unless prompted, and even then he speaks casually of his abuse and still very much acts as though it's normal, becoming frustrated when people start to point out how it wasn't.
